Divinity #2

  • The good

Story is very engrossing. Abram's character development handled in a wonderful way

  • The bad

    No action this issue

  • The ugly

  • Divinity #2 continues with the world attempting to make sense of Abram’s return and his seemingly limitless power. Since this was a secret mission prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union, there was no record of Abram’s launch or anything about his past. But Abram granted better health to a doctor who was part of the secret mission in order to inform the world about it and what Abram has done since his return. The doctor tells them that the SEAL team that was sent for reconnaissance wasn’t harmed, and in fact, they were granted their best wishes whether it was being reunited with family or being able to transform to find happiness. So Abram has only used his powers to improve lives and make things better. And the biome he controls is just another example of that. But what no one knew was that Abram had a girlfriend who discovered she was pregnant right before his mission, and he knew that before being sent out in space. So this was tearing at him, and despite being committed to the mission, there was nothing he wanted more than to be there with her and their unborn baby. Maybe this has factored into his use of his powers for good. But even if Abram’s intentions are truly benevolent, will the world sit by while someone with his power does as he pleases?

The first issue was a great introduction to the series, and I felt that Abram’s return from space with apparently unlimited power was set up wonderfully. The way his life leading up to the mission was laid out including a glimpse of the climate of the world he left made his return intriguing even on the level of wondering how it would shape his current view of the world. And the start of this issue showing the conversation with his girlfriend about her pregnancy was a great start because it provided a glimpse into the character beyond the mission, and made it personal. One question I had last issue was whether David Camp’s story paralleled Abram’s to some extent, and this issue hints even more strongly at Abram’s personal experience factoring into his use of his powers. And it made me more curious about what happened to this family Abram was supposed to have but was divided from because of his space mission. And it also made me wonder about the nature and extent of his powers. And that’s because not much was shown of the current Abram this issue but what he experienced in deep space prior to acquiring powers was shown. I liked how history was relayed to him so despite being gone for decades he was still able to witness major events taking place, shaping the world. And overall, I enjoyed how the story was told in the form of the doctor sharing this with the world.
There wouldn’t be much action this issue in terms of characters facing off in some capacity but the world’s response would be pretty exciting. Of course it would be typical but what made it exciting was the characters brought into the fold and they wouldn’t treat their mission as black and white. I won’t give anything away but let’s just say I can’t wait for issue 3 because this series has built this story up wonderfully so far.

    SUMMARY

Divinity #2 provides exciting insight into Abram’s life and his seemingly limitless power. Revealing that he was to have a family knowing how he grew up without one makes everything more intriguing as it gives more than a glimpse into his motivations and use of his powers. There isn’t any action this issue but the storytelling is excellent and the setup for major events next issue is almost flawless. After 2 issues this series has really skyrocketed up my list of must read.
