Book of Death #3

  • The good

Action packed and some story progression. Revelation of how corrupted Geomancer was captured

  • The bad

Doesn't feel like a penultimate issue considering all that has yet to occur.

  • The ugly

  • Book of Death #3 continues with Gilad on the run with Tama as they plan to set a trap to find the one who hunts them. They don’t know who hunts them but it started about a month ago when the new Geomancer David discovered his powers and his mother didn’t know what to do believing the animals were attacking David and not playing with him. Things would become even more bizarre when Darque would approach the house claiming to be there to help David but instead hurts his mother and kidnaps him. Gilad can’t rely on help from his Unity teammates since they’re still recovering from the wounds he inflicted on them, and they still believe Tama is responsible for the disasters and that he’s lost his mind. However, Gilad has realized that every time Tama reads from the Book of Death the corrupted Geomancer, David, is able to locate them and that’s when the attacks start. And since this is the first time ever that 2 Geomancers have existed at the same time he believes that Tama should be able to locate David because of their shared powers.  The only thing is they’ll have to withstand another attack long enough for her to locate David. Meanwhile, Unity hasn’t given up and have recruited Punk Mambo to help them track Gilad. Can they arrive in time to make a difference or will Gilad have to face the next attack alone?

    Book of Death #3
Aside from Gilad dismantling Unity in a relatively easy fashion there hasn’t been major battles throughout this series and that doesn’t include Gilad fighting the Earth. There isn’t one in this issue but there is plenty of action, and it was good to see Gilad fighting against a variety of dead monsters under Darque’s control. The explanation for Darque being such a threat was due to his necromantic powers giving him the ability to raise the dead and in turn create an even bigger army. Considering the number of zombie related stories (especially recent events in Game of Thrones, for example), this might seem like overkill, no pun intended, but the way it was tied into the story through the use of the Book of Death was pretty interesting. So I didn’t have a problem with Gilad using his arsenal against them trying to protect Tama while she read from the book. And Darque lashing out at David with his powers made the situation feel even more intense and kept me on edge. Unfortunately there was still no direct fight with Gilad or even Unity, since they only made a cameo appearance early in the issue.

    Book of Death #3
So the lack of a significant battle or event is why this issue didn’t feel like the penultimate issue in this series and instead feels as if there are at least 2 additional issues remaining. The story did progress in terms of providing answers to the big questions such as how Darque has been able to control the Geomancer and his connection to the Book of Death. Maybe, it’s a compliment to the series that I would want another issue but I would’ve liked to see more come to a head this issue. I won’t give away any spoilers but I also don’t know what’s ahead for the conclusion of this series so I’ll hold off until then. For now, this was still another solid issue in the series.

    SUMMARY

Book of Death #3 is a high-octane issue that provides in-depth answers to the Book of Death and Darque’s plans with David, the Geomancer. Even though Unity only makes a brief appearance, Gilad is more than enough to provide entertainment with his battle against Darque’s army of the dead. However, this issue doesn’t feel like a penultimate issue because a lot is left unresolved but I’m still enjoying the intriguing story and direction of this series. Can’t wait to see how it concludes next issue.
