Barb Wire #4

  • The good

Great action sequences and interesting twist at battle's conclusion.

  • The bad

Stormblud's limitations show through again making the battle feel too long nor does it show his impact on city. Doesn't delve into the intriguing power structure even more.

  • The ugly

  • Barb Wire #4 is the conclusion to the fight between Barb and the impossibly strong and deranged Wyvern Stormblud. Nothing seems to stop him, and not even a headfirst fall into a steel mill container can slow him down. He simply knocks over the container so he can continue his pursuit of Barb. She’s out of ideas on how to take Stormblud down, or at least shut him up, until she remembers the taser she had and contacts her team. While she’s keeping Stormblud occupied she asks them to look for the special taser she originally wanted to use on him and once they find it she would find them. Even though Stormblud appears to be slowing down from chasing Barb he tricks her and destroys the railing under her feet. She can’t keep this pace up forever and it’s only a matter of time until Stormblud finally wears her out. Can her team find the taser before Stormblud finds her? And even if she does take him down can she count on Mace to hold up his end of the bargain?

    Barb Wire #4

If there’s one series that has been pretty fun to read overall it’s been Barb Wire. It hasn’t just been one thing but a variety of things ranging from character development to the way the story has unfolded with Barb having to strike deals in order to save her club while pleasing a reality show. And even though Stormblud’s schtick was wearing on me last issue since his limitations as a character was showing, I was still enjoying the overall scenario. This issue pretty much starts off the same with Barb on the run and Stormblud chasing behind her yelling nonsense. There was still a certain fun factor to it with Stormblud being the unstoppable force and Barb’s life hanging by a thread. I attribute that to the writing. However, I think it went on a little too long this issue so I was relieved when he was finally taken down. And that’s because the issue could return to events outside of the Steel Mill, which were more intriguing than the unstoppable force since there wasn’t anything more to him than his strength. Or at least what was shown.

Things weren’t so simple for Barb once she captured Stormblud and I liked the twist here although I feel it was somewhat rushed. The power structure in Steel Harbor didn’t change, and I would have liked to see that elaborated on more perhaps in the form of how Stormblud’s rampage affected the status quo. But as a setup to the series this was a great conclusion to the story arc because it creates so much potential for events going forward with the interesting new dynamic these series of events created. It’s been a good start for the return to Steel Harbor and I’m looking forward to delving into more story lines.

    SUMMARY

Barb Wire #4 is a good conclusion to the first story arc and a great setup for things to come with its relatively complex status quo. The battle between Barb and Stormblud is entertaining although Stormblud’s limitations as a character shows through again. I’m more excited for what’s to come due to the deal between Barb and Mace, and how that can impact her future activities but this issue doesn’t delve into the current power structure too much. But overall things look good for the future of Steel Harbor. Or at least entertaining for readers.
