Barb Wire #3

  • The good

Great action sequences and artwork. Pretty fun read

  • The bad

Stormblud's limitations as a character are more apparent this issue. Very little story progression overall.

  • The ugly

  • Barb Wire #3 continues with her hunting Wyvern Stormblud to collect one of the craziest bounties in her life. Seeing as how she’s in dire straits financially, the producers of her reality TV show, as well as the leaders of the two biggest gangs in the city, want her to pursue Stormblud she has no other options to get out of this predicament. But she doesn’t enter Stormblud’s hideout by herself since she has a full camera crew in tow along with her partners. The plan is to lay a trap for Stormblud before he gets back at the end of the night after a regular day but they’re surprised at what they find. He apparently still sleeps in an actual crib surrounded by bottles and stuffed animals, and none of that reveals his true violent nature. After a period of time Stormblud finally returns in a drunken stupor ranting in a way he probably doesn’t even understand but even in this state he’s still able to toss a car clean off the dock into the water. Eventually he settles in and passes out for the night, and that’s when Barb decides to make her move to subdue him. But has she bitten off more than she can chew and unnecessarily risking her life in the process?

This series started off as a blast with an interesting setup and dynamic characters, and last issue only built on that. This issue dealt solely with Barb’s battle against Stormblud so there wasn’t much story progression this issue as the previous two but it was still a fun read overall. And that was due to the intense action so it was a great thing that Patrick Olliffe’s artwork was more than up to the task in making each panel feel exciting and suspenseful. So the fear that not only Barb had in apprehending Stormblud but also her companions emanated in just about every panel raising Stormblud’s stature and never betraying the fact that one missed step could mean their end. It was really good to see Barb in action and trying to make use of her environment to take Stormblud out, and then using her brains considering her strength was clearly no match for Stormblud.

It was really good that the action was entertaining because Stormblud’s limitations as a character showed through this issue since nothing new was revealed about the character’s backstory or origin of his strength. Parts of his drunken stupor were humorous and raw but his nonsensical rants throughout the entire issue wore a little thin.  I noted in my review of issue #2 that with the overall character dynamics and scenarios in the first 2 issues that Stormblud might not have to be more than a raving lunatic because of his role in shaking up the fragile status quo. But since the state of the city wasn’t addressed and it was just Stormblud he didn’t have more of an impact than an unstoppable bulldozer. The Mike Tyson quote, however, was hilarious and I have to acknowledge that. I just hope that next issue gives a little more than Stormblud to be entertaining.

    SUMMARY

Barb Wire #3 is an action-packed issue that finally pits Barb against Stormblud in a no holds barred match, and does an excellent job in portraying his unbelievable strength relative to others. The action and artwork are more than up for the task in making this issue entertaining, however Stormblud’s proclamations eventually wore a little thin at certain points this issue. But it’s not bad that an issue is devoted mostly to action as long as the enjoyable story continues to progress in the next issues.
