Avatar Karting 2

  • The good

Fun to play, different tracks give a variety of races. Split screen and online play

  • The bad

Few occassions where it's possible to get stuck on a wall and come to complete stop even when driving at top speed

  • The ugly

  • Avatar Karting 2 is a racing game developed by Juan Alberto Munoz available on Xbox Live. You’re pitted against 7 other racers and you can either play solo, split-screen mode with another player or in multiplayer using system link or online. There are 10 different tracks to race on and you can either choose the track yourself for fun or you can enter into the World Championship races and go through all 10 tracks and see how you measure on the global leaderboard. Even though ‘kart’ appears in the title don’t mistake it for a game that features a famous plumber and his friends and enemies. It features just regular Go Karts. But don’t judge the game based on something it never attempts to be and just enjoy it for what it is because you’re in for one hell of a ride.

The game gives you a lot of options to choose from before you start racing. Your character isn’t customizable in the game because  it’s your Xbox Avatar. And the only customizing you can do for the actual Go Kart is the flag that’s displayed on the back of it. However you can set the number of laps, the difficulty setting and even a feature called ‘auto-brake’ where the game automatically slows you down when you approach the curves on the track so you can turn better. And you can also adjust the sensitivity of the controls to fit how you want. Think of it as upgrading the handling of the kart to suit your needs. So the game does a lot for those who aren’t big on racing games to work their way into this one. And this is where all customization ends. But the fun is in the racing itself.

The controls are responsive and consistent. This is obviously important in a racing game. And with some of the tracks having some serious curves this is much appreciated. You can ram and bump other karts and they can do the same to you and I noticed some are more aggressive than others. There are no boosts of any kind so it’s just simple driving and the challenge is in mastering the different tracks the game has to offer. And some tracks are more difficult than others. So if you choose the World Championship I suggest trying all the tracks first because it gets harder with each track and your final rank is based on your time on all the tracks.

And the computer makes less and less mistakes so by track 8 you’ll have to be almost perfect to come in first from that track on. So it can be one mistake that can cause you to lose the race in an early lap and you have no way to catch up to first place. However there is a 30 second rewind feature so if you’re in first and get stuck at a turn you can rewind the past 30 seconds and try it again. It’s a neat little feature that can avoid frustration from losing a lead but it’s completely optional so you don’t have to use it.

And add to this split screen play and multiplayer and this is a simple yet solid racing game. This isn’t Forza or a Need for Speed racing game but it’s enjoyable in a simple way for a casual gamer and even a hardcore gamer might enjoy a few laps around the tracks as I did.  If you’re looking for a racing game to pass the time or even for family fun I recommend giving this a try
