Assassin’s Creed Uprising #1

  • The good

Intriguing start with interesting cast of characters. The Black Cross

  • The bad

Action sequences can be difficult to follow at times.

  • The ugly

  • Assassin’s Creed Uprising #1 is the start of a new chapter in the saga with the Phoenix Project on the verge of completion. It opens up with Charlotte De La Cruz jumping out a high-rise in Hong Kong after a raid went bad. She tells Guernica that she belives they’re assassins just like them. And that they must know who she is. Galina and the others are training My’Shell Lemair to be an assassin. They’re unaware of Charlotte and Guernica being ambushed by other assassins. Have the assassins truly turned on each other or is there more beneath the surface?

Meanwhile, the new Black Cross is working with Violet Da Costa to uncover the assassins’ tracks. They’re not entirely sure what the assassins could have been searching for or what occurred. And considering both have ulterior motives it only makes matters that much more complicated. Maybe they can make sense of what’s happening because Charlotte’s team is at a loss.

Assassin’s Creed Uprising is an ambitious project that I actually think will be successful. The individual Assassin’s Creed and Templar series had a lot going for them. Mainly the characters and the setting. However, there were times when I felt the story arcs would drag. The sheer number of interesting characters in this series would seem to make it difficult to squander the potential here. So thankfully this first issue utilizes the compelling story threads to give this series an entertaining start.

Even if you haven’t kept up with the Assassin’s Creed or Templar series this issue is good for a starting point. It’s not necessary to know which characters originated in the video games and which ones originated in the comics. Charlotte attempting to get answers from her attackers was enough for the reader to see this was indeed a unique situation. The story was easy to follow especially with the attached introductions. And it was very intriguing and made me want to know more about what was occurring. The artwork wasn’t as crisp as I would’ve wanted and that made the action sequences a little difficult to follow.

The story went up an extra notch for me when Black Cross came into the picture. He would investigate the events that took place during Charlotte’s raid and this would start bringing the story threads together. This part of the story was more engrossing. Maybe it’s because Templars such as Black Cross and Violet have more depth and more interesting story lines. And since the last pages of the issue focused exclusively on Black Cross I wasn’t upset about that. Granted this is the first issue but it seems like he’s going to play a major role in bringing the various groups together. And that will be exciting.

    SUMMARY

Assassin’s Creed Uprising #1 is an entertaining start to the series with its blend of action and character development. It starts off action-packed with Charlotte jumping out the window and that intensity never lets up throughout the issue. The Assassins come off as slightly generic but that’s mostly due to the series just starting. However, the addition of the Templars gives the story more depth and I can’t wait to see what’s next.
