Armor Hunters: Harbinger #3

  • The good

Beautiful storytelling consisting of an engrossing personal narrative as well as large scale series of events, capturing the full scope of the situation. Artwork is highly effective. Satisfying conclusion

  • The bad

    Zygos twins involvement?

  • The ugly

  • Armor Hunters: Harbinger #3 is the conclusion to the mini-series featuring the young psiots as they face the Armor Hunters threat in the form of an alien insect swarm. It opens up with the team fleeing the swarm with no way to defend themselves. One of the insects goes down Cloud’s throat leaving her in severe pain while Cronus tries to heal her from any unknown effects. Fortunately, Titan’s large monster is distracting the majority of the insects and in turn giving Ramsey the opportunity to clear a path for most of the team to escape through a light tunnel. And the Telic and the twins seem to be protected in their jeep by a repulsor field created by the  psiot they found in the midst of Mexico City. However, Torque, Faith and Titan are at the biggest disadvantage as incoming jets knock Torque and Titan from the sky with Faith unable to help them. Things go from bad to worse as one of the alien insects is able to enter Torque’s mouth as well. And to think Cronus believed the team finally had its freedom after escaping Harada’s grasp only to be caught in this latest battle against the Armor Hunters. And the feeling is not much has changed with them fighting in a life or death battle that has greater implications than their current situation, like pawns in the game of others. But are things truly different for the team in ways that Cronus just can’t see yet? None of this will even matter if they don’t survive the alien insect swarm.

    Armor Hunters: Harbinger #3

This series has been the only one connected to the Armor Hunters event that’s been dealing directly with the aftermath in Mexico City, and considering the scope of what happened, that’s been no easy task. But this issue does an incredible job in bringing it all together from the significance of the selection of the new president to what could lie ahead for the country and any hope for rebuilding. And it was very engrossing from the beginning as the alien swarm was terrifying because of the reactions of the characters. And when one of the insects entered Cloud it was a horrifying moment we all can relate to in a way. Ok, maybe getting a gnat in your mouth when walking at night in the summertime isn’t the same as having a gigantic alien insect fly into your mouth and enter your digestive system. But it’s relatable in a creepy way as it takes the concern/fear of an insect entering your body to another level. The artwork helped this a lot with its details complete with extra saliva, in Torque’s case, and terrified looks on the faces of the characters to bring the point home more. Last issue I felt that an alien insect swarm seemed sort of random when compared to the other tactics used by the Armor Hunters but this issue did a great job in connecting this tactic to their overall goal. And it also served as an excellent way to show the different characters’ abilities, which was perfect for me seeing as how all these characters are new to me. So, for example, what was revealed about Torque’s use of his powers was very intriguing or how Cloud was able to use hers with the alien insect inside her was fascinating. And the way Robert Gill’s artwork switched to the abstract so flawlessly gave me chills. So yes, this was a really entertaining issue but this series has successfully created a strong desire in me to find as many back issues as I can with these characters in order to read some of these backstories. So as I’m writing this I don’t know where things left off in the previous series for the team but there is tremendous progress within this series. And I really appreciated the tone being consistent in terms of dealing with very human issues because the way the new Mexican President was handled signified hope in the midst of all the suffering and corruption, like Generation Zero. And in the process made a believer out of me.

    SUMMARY

Armor Hunters: Harbinger #3 is a solid conclusion to the series as it does an excellent job in wrapping up Generation Zero’s involvement in the Armor Hunters event as well as addressed the aftermath in Mexico City. The parallel drawn between Generation Zero’s predicament after escaping Harada’s group and Mexico City’s predicament was powerful and worked on many levels. And as a result the characters are so intriguing I want to know even more about them and their stories. And there’s plenty of action in this issue and it’s both gripping and electrifying due to the characters’ powers and the wonderful artwork. I don’t know how the other Armor Hunter series will end but hopefully they’re all as satisfying as this one because now I’m a fan of this team.
