Armor Hunters: Bloodshot #2

  • The good

Great plan requiring Bloodshot, Livewire and the Colonel to work together in order to defeat Lilt, and as a result there was interesting character development.

  • The bad

Character detail early in the issue could've improved the initial action sequence. Doesn't shed light on Malgam's past

  • The ugly

  • Armor Hunters: Bloodshot #2 opens with Blood and Lilt facing off to decide the fate of Malgam, who has been infected with the virus from the armor. Lilt states that the entire planet has to be scoured and wants to know what Malgam has told Earth’s forces about the Armor Hunters. Malgam tells Lilt that the only thing he told Earth’s forces was that it was useless to go against the Armor Hunters and nothing else. However Bloodshot isn’t impressed by Lilt’s bravado and attacks him in an attempt to gain a tactical advantage and free Malgam. They engage in a prolonged firefight while exchanging blows, and Lilt’s words that the armor will infect and kill them all fall on deaf ears. It doesn’t seem to matter as he starts to handle Bloodshot anyway but Colonel Capshaw isn’t completely out of the battle as she first focuses on evacuating the base and making sure the remaining soldiers can make it to the Love Boat. In order to defeat Lilt Bloodshot will need some help and the colonel is his best bet. He did say that he had no intentions of leaving the base but it’s certain he didn’t mean this would be his end. But can he hope to defeat Lilt while making sure Malgam won’t escape and increase the attacks from the Armor Hunters?

I really enjoyed the first issue and was pretty excited about Bloodshot finally taking center stage in the crossover event, and considering there has been a lack of direct fighting between the main Armor Hunters and Earth’s heroes, I was looking forward to this battle. And time wasn’t wasted as the two of them got into early, however I felt slightly mixed about the action. The sequence of movements was wonderfully drawn as it started off with an intense gunfight before Lilt deployed his whip but I couldn’t help but wish the character detail was a little sharper during this. I still felt engrossed in the battle because of the transition from one panel to another and that’s a credit to the artwork. And some of the panels would reflect the brutality of the fight as Bloodshot would take massive damage putting his incredible healing ability on display while showing its limitations. It wouldn’t just be all action as Lilt’s character would reflect the general weariness of all the Armor Hunters in his anger about being there because of Malgam’s betrayal. If you’ve been keeping up with the Armor Hunters event then you already know the Colonel would focus on evacuating in the Love Boat but this issue shows she was involved in plenty before that actually happened. Of course she couldn’t stand toe to toe with Lilt so the way she, Livewire and Bloodshot had to work together was very interesting as they would have to trust each other in order for it to succeed. And in terms of character development that’s important even outside of the Armor Hunters event because it’ll help Bloodshot become established in his new capacity working with Earth’s forces. And so the way the plan unfolded was very entertaining and a reminder of why Bloodshot is such an enjoyable character to me. This issue, and his apparent task in the next issue shows I’m not alone in that sentiment as I expect things to be just as engrossing next issue.

    SUMMARY

Armor Hunters: Bloodshot #2 is an intense, action-packed issue that opens up with a bang and finishes with an explosion. In the first extended battle involving one of the main Armor Hunters, an entertaining plan is put together requiring Bloodshot, Livewire and the Colonel to work together to defeat him, and so it was well worth the wait. Even the biggest Bloodshot fans should feel satisfied with the developments in this issue. And considering the task he has to take on next issue alone, I’m looking forward to an incredible conclusion to an enjoyable series.
