Aliens vs. Predator: Life and Death #1

  • The good

Hot and heavy action with our favorite extraterrestrials

  • The bad

    Story hampered by Alien: Covenant?

  • The ugly

Being on the wrong end of a Predator blade

  • Spoilers Ahead

Here we are, the last four issues of Life and Death has begun. Just like with Fire and Stone, we end with Aliens vs. Predator. This story has definitely felt a bit “safer” in comparison to Fire and Stone, but after seeing the trailer for Alien: Covenant I now understand why.

One of the reasons the Paget, Jill, and the Marines were willing to risk it all to visit Chris was the promise of treatment. Lorimer promised to do whatever it took to remove the Queen embryo from her womb. Unfortunately, for everyone involved a Predator has made it’s way to onto the Hasdrubal. Lorimer and Goode soon discover what their spines look like. Some cool visuals here as well.

With rescue now out of the picture the survivors must figure out their next move. I thought we were going to receive another “dropship from the Sulaco” scenario but Abnett, fortunately, went another direction with it. These nods to previous movies don’t always work out, or as Aaron Percival (Corporal Hicks of AvPGalaxy.net) says “I hate them, especially when they pull away from the action”. This was in reference to the first Alien vs. Predator movie, which clearly had some forced references. I think it worked in this case, maybe it occurring in a comic situation helped.  With the xenomorphs hot on the tail of their new Queen and nowhere else to go, they all head to the Engineer’s site. The aliens manage to intercept them as they make their way to “safety”, and battle ensues. When Ahab is involved, the battles tend to be entertaining, and this is no exception. After the dust settles, they find yet another surprise to welcome them…

    SUMMARY

I thoroughly enjoyed Aliens vs. Predator: Life and Death #1 and felt it was one the stronger issues of the series so far. An excellent display of action and story, which sets the (extremely bloody) table for the last three issues. If you are yet to pick up this issue, do yourself a favor and seek it out now. Until next issue, stay frosty!
