Aliens: Life or Death #1

  • The good

Lots of action, Roth is alive!

  • The bad

Artwork might turn off some fans

  • The ugly

    Getting jumped by xenomorphs

  • (TV voice over) Previously on Life and Death: The Colonial Marines and Company employees are scattered after the chaos of LV-223. Roth, Galgo, and Ahab are left behind on the planet as Singer and the others take a flight with the Engineer. Now, on Aliens: Life or Death #1

For those who were waiting for their Colonial Marines versus Aliens battle, your acidic wish has been granted. A spectacular firefight greets us with no dramatic buildup. There was none needed as the previous series was the only set up we needed. Few things get us Aliens fans going then a good battle, and this one didn’t disappoint. If you enjoy great xenomorph kills and Marines being picked off, you won’t be disappointed.

It seems Dan Abnett shares my wavelength (or I read his, not really sure) and has turned Roth into a focal point this issue. His character continues to grow and is eminently likable. It’s nice to have a Colonial Marine stand out, and be memorable as something more than cannon fodder. Breakout character Galgo is still around attempting to take out an Engineer with the help of his buddy Ahab. Hopefully, Ahab and Roth find a way to link up.

    Aliens: Life or Death #1
Moritat is tabbed for the art this time around, and it is a definite change of pace from the previous series. It seems to alternate between cartoony and gritty, which might elicit some negative reactions among readers. It works, but it took a few panels to adjust. However, there are some fantastic portraits especially some key scenes with Galgo and Roth. Don’t be surprised if they end up as your wallpaper or lock screen.

    SUMMARY

Considering all the action involved, Aliens: Life or Death #1 isn’t your typical first issue. Instead of a slow build, we get a xenomorph jaws to the face. A nice contrast to the issues prior, this portion of the Life or Death story is off to a good start. Now that we’ve reached the halfway point, the story is set to continue its evolution.
