Aliens: Defiance #5

  • The good

    Story beginning to take shape

  • The bad

    Nothing.

  • The ugly

Getting ripped in half by an Alien

  • As we reach Aliens: Defiance #5, the Defiance storyline is beginning to take shape. Hendricks and Davis 01 have battled aliens, a mutiny, and their own relationships. After receiving a transmission from her former doctor, Hendricks contacts her. Upon discovering a station that is spilling out human and alien bodies, Hendricks and Davis 01 decide to continue their mission.

Despite her bad back, Hendricks puts her focus on the task hand: Breaking into an alien infested space station. There is no good news to be had here as the creatures have found their way into a large space hub. It’s a common stop for personal and commercial ships, for refueling, eating, and resting. Not a great situation for the inhabitants, but an entertaining one for the readers.

Upon finishing the breaking and entering, they are greeted by a survivor. A medical officer by the name of Dr. Hollis claims to be the last one left…well, the last human. Hendricks inquires about what happened to the rest of the station, and Hollis paints a gruesome tale. This section was great. Instead of Hollis telling the story, it is shown to us. No wasted dialogue, just the poor fate of those who were staying.

With his turn back in rotation, Tristan Jones does not disappoint. There is an almost a Hadley’s Hope feel to this issue, and it is wonderful. The last half of the story is a game changer; I look forward to seeing what happens next. Jones and Brian Woods continue to weave magic.

    SUMMARY

For those that read my reviews (a hearty thank you to the regular readers), it is no secret that I can’t stop gushing about this Defiance series. It has been slim pickings in quality for this franchise for seemingly 57 years. FOX had turned the most fearsome movie creature into a horror icon with no meaning. But, Alien Defiance has helped (along with Alien: Isolation) bring the franchise back to where it belongs. Seriously, if you are a fan and have yet to pick this up I don’t know what to tell you at this point.
