Aliens: Defiance #4

  • The good

Understanding the many levels of Zula’s pain

  • The bad

    Not much action

  • The ugly

Trying to figure out whose side Davis is on.

  • After staving off a mutiny, Hendricks and Davis are left to their own devices in their mission in Aliens: Defiance #4. They are now AWOL, sacrificing everything to go after the xenomorphs and eliminate them forever. A seemingly simple path has turned up many roads.

Our survivors pick up their mission exploring wreckage of a battle long since finished. A floating barrier of bodies litters the area: human, android and alien. “A fascinating beauty these things have,” Davis observes of the one of the aliens, something most of us fans agree with it. Even after 37 years, it remains the most unique movie monster we’ve ever laid eyes upon. Hendricks denies his request for wanting to take a sample back. But will he obey?

We next learn that during the mutiny, the opening of the communications to Weyland-Yutani also let in all the personal messages. Hendricks has a few urgent waiting for (including one from Amanda Ripley), but the most important of all is one from Dr. Emi Yang. It looks like she was her personal doctor, checking in. She assures Hendricks can come home without any penalty despite what her supervisors ordered. But is this sincere? Or is this part of a plan to get Zula Hendricks home after going AWOL? During the viewing of this message, we learn how she received her debilitating injuries when she found herself on the wrong end of a battle thanks to a grenade or two. And it was her first mission. They discarded her like nothing, and she was left to fight her new battle of rehabilitation.

After two issues of Aliens-esque action, things slow down a bit to more of an Alien vibe. Mystery and horror now surround our two survivors. Hendricks is battling her own injuries and the xenomorph threat. Davis must fight the Company’s orders, unless he has own agenda. The pieces continue to fall into play.
