Aliens: Defiance #2

  • The good

Great tension, character building, more great art

  • The bad

Once again, waiting for the next issue..

  • The ugly

  • With the aftermath of Alien Day behind us, a good many of us are still bathing in the xenomorph drenched fallout. One of the true highlights of that day was the release of the first issue of Aliens: Defiance. We were introduced to Zula Hendricks, who has now gone AWOL with her group of combat synthetics ( aka”Davis”). After discovering what Weyland-Yutani had planned for the Aliens, the mission to eradicate them all had begun.

Their first mission is a Seegson science station, suddenly devoid of activity due to a xenomorph attack. On the surface, it seems like your basic “search and destroy” aliens comic, but thankfully that is not the case. This is Hendrick’s first action since her injuries, she is not 100% quite yet and that struggle is conveyed throughout the issue. Hendricks calls on her training as Colonial Marine to get past the pain. She reflects on having to prove herself more than others due not only being an enlisted female, but being black as well.

Keeping in the tradition of Alien movies, the Davis units are anything but boring robots. Hopefully, most of you reading have played Alien : Isolation and hear their voices in each dialogue bubble. I really like the idea of synthetics designated just for combat situations, something also addressed in the Rage War series by Tim Lebbon (Another good read). It seems like a method Weyland-Yutani would use to wrangle up valuable xenomorph data.

    SUMMARY

The story it is a nice mix of tension and action. There is something inherently creepy about exploring a dead ship, with the ghosts of battles past haunting each corridor. It’s a feeling that has been missing from the franchise for far too long, and Tristan Jones captures it perfectly. By going back to basics, Jones and Brian Woods have made the Aliens franchise fresh again.
