Alien vs. Predator: Fire And Stone #1

  • The good

    Gorgeous artwork, good action

  • The bad

    Odd issue story placement

  • The ugly

  • For those that don’t remember, Alien vs. Predator (aka AvP) was the ultimate crossover series. It was two of the most popular sci-fi universes and creatures colliding. Despite two lackluster movies, interest in AvP has always been strong. Keeping with the theme, here is our first taste in resurrecting this brand.

*This issue takes place between Prometheus #4 and Predator #1*

Granted, it’s only been two issue but the decisions by Dark Horse so far have been sound. I found it odd that this issue would place itself after Prometheus is completed. This jarred me at first, but Christopher Sebela did an admirable job making it work.

The issue starts with the aftermath of the events on LV-223, as we witness some glorious Predator hunting action and take off from the planet. We then shift to what’s left of the expedition, as previously introduced Security Officer Galgo and Astrobiologist Francis are attempting to salvage what is left. As I suspected, Francis and his love for toying with synthetics resulted in some unforeseen results. His pet science project Elden has undergone some major changes. Certainly not the shy assistant we were introduced to.

Let me just come out and say that the artwork in Alien vs. Predator: Fire And Stone #1 is fantastic. Ariel Olivetti brings three different worlds to life wonderfully. His work on the Predators and the environment of LV-223 stands out. The attention to detail for every page is impressive. Christopher Sebela manages to keep it interesting throughout and I was impressed how he alluded to past events without spoiling anything. The issue was not action oriented but it never felt boring. And I enjoyed the play between Galgo and Francis.

    Summary

All in all, AvP: Fire and Stone #1 is a well-put together issue. After my initial worry that the Prometheus series would be ruined, I am now more curious as to what happens in the next three issues. The Alien vs. Predator series always shines in comic book form, and this issue continues the tradition.
