Marvel Hip-Hop Variant Covers

, ,

To commemorate the current hip-hop beef between Meek Mill and Drake, Marvel has decided to release Hip-Hop variant covers for their upcoming new series after the conclusion of Secret Wars. Well, actually Marvel will have hip-hop variant covers coming in October but they have nothing to do with that beef and everything to do with the unique impact of hip-hop in the world since its inception. In regards to this project, Marvel’s Editor-In-Chief, Axel Alonso, says “beginning this October, we will shine a spotlight on the seamless relationship between those two unique forces in when we unveil the first of more than fifty variant covers, each of which pays tribute to an iconic album cover from the past 30 years that shaped pop-culture over the past three decades.” This is a pretty cool idea and when you see 12 of those covers below you’ll be impressed with how they are accurately portrayed and not only can they be recognized instantly but represent the particular character well. Yes, diversity has become a hot topic in comics, and rightly so, and with the recent changes to major characters this is in the process of being addressed. And I hope to see more of that in terms of the actual creators and writers.
There are many hip-hop variant covers I plan on getting when they’re released and I’m hoping their release coincides with New York Comic-Con since some are set to be released starting in October.
