Marvel and Netflix Join Forces

In the type of news that requires me to pinch myself for a few days before I accept I’m not dreaming, Marvel and Netflix join forces to bring 4 exclusive new live-action series that will culminate in a mini-series event. Starting in 2015, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist will have their own series set in Hell’s Kitchen and they’ll come together in the Defender mini-series event. And it won’t just be a couple of episodes each as Netflix “has committed to a minimum of four, thirteen episodes series” so these will be full series. And with the success of Netflix exclusive series this past year, and the tone of some of those series, I would assume that Marvel has a true opportunity here to make series worthy of these four characters in a gritty area of NYC. In case you’re not familiar with the characters here’s a quick rundown of each:

  • Daredevil – known as the Man Without Fear, who is also blind and possess superhuman sensitivity and accuracy due to his heightened remaining senses
  • Jessica Jones – possesses superhuman strength and can fly at sub-sonic speeds
  • Luke Cage – Formerly Power Man and possesses nearly indestructible skin, superhuman strength and stamina
  • Iron Fist – martial artist with enhanced strength, speed, agility and senses due to the infused power of the dragon Shou-Lau

These characters have a long history together and currently Luke Cage and Jessica Jones are married with a daughter. although I would assume the series will cover their origins in some fashion. I’m always watching series on Netflix and of course I love Marvel so this partnership is perfect to me. It’s interesting to see what else could develop down the line as a result of this partnership being successful.
