Gotham

Not to be outdone by Marvel with its critically acclaimed premiere of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., DC has announced a new live-action TV series with Fox set in a grittier but well-known city of the same name: Gotham. But don’t expect to see Batman because this show features Detective James Gordon, who is new to Gotham and takes place prior to his appointment to Commissioner. So it’s set long before Batman existed. It’s not clear if it will be connected in some way to the Dark Knight trilogy, but with a new Batman announced (and presumably a new direction), this series might be connected more to laying a foundation for that as opposed to maintaining the continuity of the trilogy. But there’s no need to act as if you’ve been gassed by the Scarecrow and act fearful of this series because Gotham is as much a part of the Batman mythos as much as the cape and cowl. And even though the movies strongly suggested that Batman was responsible for the costumed villains, the “reality” is that Gotham not only has a history of criminal organizations but the occult and of course the criminally insane in Arkham Asylum. So Gotham is ripe with potential stories and it’ll be interesting to see it from the perspective of the Gotham PD and in particular, Batman’s future and staunchest ally, James “Jim” Gordon.

There are already a lot of law enforcement shows that are out there and it’s clear that there’s also a large audience (including me) for superhero themed movies and shows, so it makes sense to have shows that combine the two. And Batman’s relationship with Gotham PD has been the center of countless story lines so there’s more than enough detail regarding Gotham PD that has been expressed since Batman’s inception. I’m not the only one that thinks this series has potential as Fox has already ordered a full season and I’ll definitely be checking it out when it finally airs
