E3 2014: Sony Press Conference

Yes Sony made sure to showcase upcoming games, and I’m pretty excited about that, but they also made some hardware announcements and that can ultimately be an innovative success and catch on with consumers or at the very least offer a unique experience for those who do utilize this hardware. One of these gadgets, the Playstation TV, seems to be the safer bet as its starting price of $99 ($139 with controller) makes it perfect for people who want to have access to Playstation Now but don’t have a PS4. It will also allow remote streaming from your PS4, which is similar to what the PS Vita can do, and it’ll also play PS Vita games. But the small, handheld device will also be capable of downloading music and videos, and yes you’ll have to get memory cards for this device. At the price and the gaming library on the Playstation Now this can be pretty impressive when it’s released. Sony has done a great job to make its products compatible with each other in the sense that having one device enhances the experience of having another device without being an absolute necessity. And Project Morpheus, Sony’s virtual reality device, was mentioned but not showcased. In addition to some updates to the PS4, such as YouTube being added, the greatest buzz was generated by the games presented so check them out below.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

As one who is relatively new to the Uncharted series, and been enjoying it tremendously, my excitement is based on my recent play but I’m sure long-time fans will enjoy this even more. There’s not much I can say, and not much is shown, except that this game is a must buy for me and I hope it’s as solid as my experience with the series to date.

The Order: 1886

The more I see of The Order the more impressed I am with it. This video shows brief gameplay footage but it’s the appearance of a new enemy that gives context to the game, and I love the premise and the mature tone of it.

Bloodborne

Surprising PS4 exclusive and it’s an action RPG that I have to know more about and I won’t rest until I do. Well, I have to rest but you understand my point.

Little Big Planet 3

No Man’s Sky

This game had me at dinosaurs and spaceships. It’s not dinosaurs flying spaceships but the premise of the game is just as imaginative with its vast exploration and no limit on where you can travel or what you can interact with because everything you see, even if it’s a star in space, you can travel to and explore. It’s even more incredible that this was made by an Indie studio and that puts an even bigger smile on my face. So yeah, this is definitely on my list of games to get.

inFAMOUS First Light

Featuring one of the characters in inFAMOUS Second Son, this standalone download has you explore Fetch’s past while seeking vengeance against those who did her dirty. Based on my encounters with her in Second Son and using the light powers Delsin acquired from her throughout the game I’m looking forward to this spin-off, and considering inFAMOUS is one of my favorite games this year I’m almost certain I’ll enjoy this.

Dead Island 2

This trailer is much different than the memorable trailer for the first game, and that’s a good thing because it’s more representative of what the game will actually be. I wasn’t a huge fan of the first one but it definitely had potential but the island felt lifeless even for a game about the undead, and uneventful. There is no gameplay shown here and I can’t necessarily say the game will reflect some of the humor displayed in the trailer but it’s worth a look when I finally hear about game play footage.

Entwined

This is one of those visually impressive trailers where you believe you understand what is taking place, especially considering the name, but you have to look it up later to get more information. The good thing is it was intriguing enough for me to actually learn more about this game and its an abstract action/arcade game inspired by the Chinese Peng and Kun myth (bird and giant fish) and you ultimately have to unite the two so they can be together for eternity

The Last of Us Remastered

Ok, I admit I stopped watching this trailer halfway through and it’s not because it wasn’t engrossing or I have a short attention span.  It’s because I’ve somehow been successful in avoiding all spoilers regarding this game that has been highly praised and I didn’t want to risk it being spoiled now. Once I realized this was an announcement for the PS4 and not just for Playstation Now that was all I needed to know because I’ve waited long enough to be able to play it and experience it for myself. But by all means check out the full trailer from E3.

Ratchet & Clank

Sure to excite all the Ratchet & Clank fans while being the perfect point for potential fans to start, as this is closely tied to the upcoming movie. It’ll be tied closely to the upcoming movie so it’s a re-imagining of the classic series, and yes it’s being developed by Insomniac. Count me in.
